X stopped accepting new enrollments to Creator Revenue Sharing on August 7, 2026, and the program retires on September 7, 2026. Enrolled creators have already collected two of their three final payouts, on August 14 and August 28. The last one, covering earnings through September 7, is expected around September 11. From September 8, existing members can apply to the replacement, the Original Content Rewards Program, and creators who migrate as soon as they are eligible receive their first payment under the new program on September 25.

For a text-first account between 2,000 and 200,000 followers, that news matters less than it sounds. Platform payouts were never the money. One reported mid-tier case had roughly 380,000 followers and earned $131.03 over 70 days, about $56 a month, at a rate reported near $8.50 per million impressions. The money on X comes from what your audience buys from you after they trust your judgment. This article covers every route that pays in 2026, the exact eligibility for each, what a text-first account can realistically expect, and how to wire your profile so a post turns into a sale.

Tips belong in a row rather than a section. Turn them on and forget about them, because they cost nothing to enable and will never be a line item you plan around.

How to sell your expertise as a paid API

The people who reply to your posts asking "how would you handle this" are already trying to buy your judgment. Most of them will never book a call, because a call is a big ask for a small question. A Callstand expert connector turns that judgment into something they can buy in one click, at a price you set, without either of you touching a calendar.

You publish a connector and get a handle at callstand.com/p/yourhandle. It exposes three verbs: a plan before work starts, a finished deliverable written in your style, and a review of work before it ships. You price each verb separately, so the quick plan can be cheap and the finished deliverable can be expensive. Buyers hold prepaid credits and can set per-call spend caps, which removes the invoicing and chasing that kills small consulting income.

The part that matters for a text-first account is the second surface. The same connector runs on an MCP server, the standard that lets assistants like ChatGPT and Claude plug into outside services, so those assistants consult you directly inside the tools people already work in. Someone drafting in their assistant can pull your judgment into the output without leaving the document. Developers can also build custom tools on top of the expertise API, which is how one connector ends up earning while you sleep.

There is no follower minimum, which makes this the one route on this page available to a 2,000-follower account with real domain depth.

How to switch it on: publish your connector, write the positioning line so it names the exact decisions you are qualified to make, price the three verbs, then put your handle in your profile link field and in a pinned post that shows one real output rather than a description of the service. After that, every post you write about your subject has somewhere to send the people who want more of it.

How brand deals work on X in 2026

X sets no threshold on sponsored posts, so this is negotiated entirely between you and the brand. Text-first expertise accounts have an advantage here that follower count hides. A 12,000-follower engineering account read by procurement leads at hardware companies is worth more to a vendor than a 200,000-follower general account, and vendors in technical niches know it.

Price on audience composition rather than the number, be explicit about how many sponsored posts you will run per month, and get paid on invoice terms you control. X announced Creator Connect, an AI brand-matching program, in May 2026, which may change discovery later, but it is not broadly available yet. Inbound still comes from your pinned post and your DMs.

How X Creator Subscriptions work

Subscriptions suit accounts whose audience wants continuity rather than a one-off answer. You pick from X's set monthly price points instead of typing your own number, so the lever you control is the offer, not the price.

Requirements are 18 or older and a complete profile with an account name, bio, profile picture and header image, alongside X's other eligibility criteria, and meeting them does not guarantee acceptance. Earnings are subscribers times price, minus standard platform fees like Apple's or Google's, and that fee difference is large enough to plan around: signups made in the iOS or Android apps carry the app store cut of roughly 30%, while web signups keep materially more. Send people to your web profile whenever you promote it.

Payouts run through Stripe with a $50 minimum and typically settle around 60 days after month end, so your first payment lands two months after the work.

How the Original Content Rewards Program works

This is the replacement for ads revenue sharing, and the eligibility list is where most accounts stop. The full eligibility list requires an available country, 18 or over, a personal or business account (political and government organizations are excluded), an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, good standing with no repeated Monetization Guidelines or Terms of Service violations, active posting of original content, at least 500 verified followers, and at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days. Impressions on replies do not count.

Meeting the bar does not guarantee admission. You submit an application, X responds within three business days, you get one appeal, and a failed appeal means waiting 90 days to reapply.

Payment is based on qualified impressions, which is narrower than it sounds. A qualified impression is a unique impression from a Premium subscriber, on the Home Timeline, where at least 50% of the post is visible. Repeat impressions from the same account on the same post are excluded, as are paid, promoted, artificially generated and fraudulent impressions.

Original content means content you personally created that reflects your own voice, perspective or expertise, and commentary and analysis qualify. Copied content, minimally modified content such as a changed word or an added text overlay, aggregated compilations, and cross-platform reposts by anyone other than the original creator do not. Posts are also ineligible if they are exclusively focused on monetization coaching, monetization discussion or maximizing payouts, if they carry a helpful Community Note, if they contain disinformation, or if they were created or posted by automated means.

Payouts process every two weeks with a $30 minimum, to a connected Stripe payout account or X Money account, after Stripe identity verification.

Two structural changes are worth reading twice. The impression bar dropped from the old program's 5 million to 500,000, which brings more mid-sized accounts into range. At the same time replies were removed from the count entirely, and the old program paid on ads served in replies. Reply farming as a payout strategy is finished.

What X Premium costs before you earn anything

Premium is a precondition for the rewards program, so price it into the decision. On the web, Basic and Premium pricing starts at $3 per month or $32 per year, and $8 per month or $84 per year respectively. Premium+ costs $40 per month in the US, or $395 per year, after an 82% increase that took it up from $22. Measured against a reported rate of roughly $8.50 per million verified impressions, the subscription is a business expense you justify with reach and features. For a mid-sized account the payouts do not reliably cover it.

How X per-impression pay compares to YouTube and TikTok

The three platforms pay on structurally different denominators, which is why cross-platform rate comparisons usually mislead.

YouTube pays a share of advertising revenue against monetized playbacks, so a viewer who watches a long video with several ad breaks is worth many times a viewer who bounces, and length and watch time do real work. We covered that math in our guide to monetizing YouTube. TikTok's payouts run against qualified video views, which is why its economics reward volume and completion, as broken down in our guide to making money on TikTok.

X pays against a filtered slice of your reach. The denominator is not everyone who saw the post. It is unique Premium subscribers, on the Home Timeline, who had at least half the post on screen, excluding repeats, paid placements and anything flagged as artificial. A post with a million total impressions can qualify a small fraction of them. That filtering, plus the removal of replies from the count, is why the honest anchor for X remains the reported case of about $56 a month at roughly 380,000 followers rather than any per-thousand figure you can plan a business around.

What each niche actually sells on X

How to turn an X account into an offer

Your profile is the conversion page, so treat the three fields above the fold as one unit. The bio names the decisions you help with rather than your job title, the link field points to your connector, and the header image carries the same promise so the profile does not send mixed signals. If you also run subscriptions, send people to your web profile so the app store cut stays out of it.

The pinned post is where the sale happens. Show one real piece of output, the kind of thing a buyer receives, with a single line above it explaining what it cost and what it replaced. Pinned posts that describe a service convert worse than pinned posts that are the service.

Routing from a normal post is simpler than most people make it. When a post lands and the replies fill with people asking how you would apply it to their situation, answer two publicly and reply to the rest with your connector link and the specific verb that fits their question. That is the whole funnel. The post proves the judgment, the reply names the price, the connector takes the payment.

Frequently asked questions

Is X ads revenue sharing gone?

Yes. X stopped accepting new enrollments on August 7, 2026, and the program retires on September 7, 2026. Two of the three final payouts have already gone out, on August 14 and August 28; the last, for earnings through September 7, is expected around September 11. From September 8, existing members can apply to the Original Content Rewards Program, with a first payment on September 25 for those who migrate straight away.

What are the X monetization requirements in 2026?

For Original Content Rewards: an available country, 18 or over, active Premium subscription, account in good standing, personal or business account, at least 500 verified followers, and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days with replies excluded. Subscriptions require a complete profile. Selling your own expertise requires nothing.

How much does X pay per 1,000 impressions?

There is no published per-thousand rate. Third-party reporting on the retiring program put payouts near $8.50 per million verified impressions, and payment now depends on qualified impressions only, meaning unique Premium-subscriber views on the Home Timeline with at least half the post visible. Treat any confident per-thousand figure as invented.

Do replies still earn money on X?

Not in the new program. The retiring program paid on ads served in replies, and Original Content Rewards excludes reply impressions from both the 500,000 eligibility threshold and the payout calculation. Replies still build reach and start conversations that lead to paid work, so keep writing them for that reason.

Can I monetize X without ads or Premium?

Yes, and for most accounts under 200,000 followers this is the larger number. Tips, brand deals and selling your own expertise all sit outside the platform program and carry no Premium requirement. A Callstand connector has no follower minimum at all, so a 2,000-follower specialist account can start today.

How many followers do you need to make money on X?

For platform rewards, 500 verified followers plus the 500,000 impression threshold, which is the real gate. For everything else, none. Follower count matters far less than audience composition, since a few thousand readers who make buying decisions in your field beat a large general audience.

Why was my Original Content Rewards application rejected?

Meeting the bar does not guarantee admission. Common causes are repeated Monetization Guidelines or Terms of Service issues, content that is copied, minimally modified, aggregated or reposted from another platform, or posts focused mainly on monetization itself. You get one appeal, and after a failed appeal you can reapply in 90 days.

When do X payouts arrive?

Original Content Rewards pays every two weeks with a $30 minimum, through a connected Stripe or X Money account after Stripe identity verification. Creator Subscriptions pay through Stripe with a $50 minimum, typically around 60 days after month end. Tips arrive immediately and X takes no cut of them.

Can I post about making money on X and still get paid?

Not if that is your main subject. Content exclusively focused on monetization coaching, monetization discussion or maximizing payouts is ineligible for Original Content Rewards. Occasional posts about your own business inside a broader expertise account are a different matter, but a monetization-focused account should plan on earning elsewhere.

Is X Premium worth paying for?

It is required for Original Content Rewards, so the question is whether the reach and features justify the price on their own. On the web, Basic starts at $3 per month, Premium at $8 per month, and Premium+ costs $40 per month in the US. At mid-tier impression volumes the payouts rarely cover Premium+ by themselves.
